What Does “JPEG” Mean?

There are many different digital image formats which each have differences, images quality and purposes. The most commenly used format using the lossy compression method is JPG. The compression of the image can be modified which allows a tradeoff inbetween the image quality and the size of the image. JPG is short for JPEG which is an acronym for “Joint Photographic Experts Group” and is most used format for recent digital cameras.

Most important format for pictures

The JPEG has a specific compression algorithm which is perfect for photographs and paintings of realistic scenes with only slight and smooth tone and color variations. It is also good and popular for web usage,as the size of the image is important.

However JPEG is not the most appropriate format for line drawings and other iconic graphics. Due to it’s contrast between the pixels of the image it is not ideal and causes a blurness impression. Such images are best saved in lossless graphics format : TIFF, GIF or PNG

Use of JPEG

JPEG format uses a lossy compression method which is good if you want a good quality image and low data size but reduces the image fidelity. Therefore it should not be used for images which should reproduce and exact copy of the date. Such as in certain medical or other scientific imaging applications.

Furthermore it is not a good format for documents which will be edited and modified several times. As each time the image is saved it will get compressed and lose some quality. To avoid this you can simply edit the image in a lossless format, and once the image is completly finished it can then be saved into JPEG to reduce the data size. The file extensions of JPEG are .jpg or .jpeg, although .jpe, .jiff and .jif also work. And it can support images sizes up to 65535×65535

Use of Ethernet

The Ethernet is a computer networking technology for Local Area Networks (LAN). It has been commercially available since 1980 and has been replacing most of the competing wired LAN standards. People use the Ethernet everyday without knowing that they do so. Most of the people using it will not even know what Ethernet really is.

Working in an office one uses Ethernet all the time. LAN connects all the equipment in offices, such as printers, computers, scanners and others. If somebody is working on a computer and wants to print out his results he uses LAN connections, and therefore Ethernet, to send the information to the printer, which prints the results on paper. Today a lot of companies use the internet to send documents and emails but using the internet is not as save as using a local network. Email accounts can be hacked and important details or information can be stolen. Companies which try to prevent this still use local networks to communicate.

The Ethernet can be used in many different ways. LAN does not only connect all the equipment in an office it also can be used to communicate within it. Therefore Ethernet is very useful and is a great invention. Many companies use Ethernet and it will continue to be important the life of employees which use it every day.

LAN parties

Online gaming is very popular these days but there is also an alternative to gaming online. LAN parties are still very popular. During a LAN party the participants connect their computers or laptops via a LAN cable so that they can interact in the game with each other. LAN parties can either be private or for a big number of people. The advantage of a LAN party is that people can interact with each other face to face while gaming. This makes the whole game experience much more communicative.

Private LAN parties are held amongst a bunch of friends or sometimes even family members. After the date for the party is set the participants meet in one location and set up their computer and connect them via a LAN cable. The games played can be of different kind. Some like to play computer based role plays or military games. But each single game which has a multiplayer mode can be used for a LAN party. These parties can go on for hours or even days. People usually drink and have snacks during the game and also take breaks on a regular basis.

LAN parties for many people are organized by a group or company. They take place in assembly halls or other big public places. Sometimes an entrance fee is required. Taking part in a public party can be a lot of fun, too. One gets to meet a lot of new people and can compete with them in the game. During the time people are not playing they can eat or drink and most of the times there is also music playing. This is very similar to a regular party but gaming is still the center of everybody’s attention. During these public LAN parties there is usually a contest. The player wins, who defeats all the others or successfully finishes the quest. Sometimes there is a trophy or some price money to win. But for most of the players it is not about winning but about having fun and competing in a game against each other.
